About the Waterloo region
The Waterloo Region is a vibrant, multicultural area in Ontario. Waterloo region is home to just over 500,000 people and is situated in a mix of urban landscape and rolling farms hills, just one hour west of Canada's largest city, Toronto. The Waterloo region include the cities of Waterloo, Kitchener and Cambridge.
Our region has three prominent universities: Wilfrid Laurier University, the University of Waterloo and the University of Guelph, and a local college: Conestoga College
The Waterloo region is home to many centres of creativity and innovation, including the Centre for International Governance Innovation, the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, and the Canadian Clay and Glass Museum. It is recognized as Canada's Techonology Triangle, and is home to cutting edge companies such as RIM, Com Dev and Google.
Past University of Waterloo President and now current Governor General David Johnston, applauds the region's orientation towards community and collaboration. In fact, individuals or groups in the Waterloo Region that best exemplify that community-minded spirit are nominated for "The Record's Barnraiser Award" which honours the Mennonites' tradition of barnraising (the first settlers of the Waterloo region) and celebrates the community’s tradition of working collaboratively to accomplish what an individual cannot.
